How To

How to stain hardwood

Staining wood can be described as a process where chemicals are applied to the wood surface. This causes the wood to take on a new color. This chemical reaction causes the wood to change from white to brownish red. Oak is the most common wood type for staining. However, you can also use other wood types.

You can apply wood stains in many different ways. Mixing the stain in a solvent such as turpentine and spraying it onto the wood is one method. Some methods involve a mixture of water and dye that is applied directly to the wood. You can mix stains into varnishes or paints to make them part of your finish coat.

Preparing the wood surface is the first step to staining it. To apply the stain, clean the wood completely. Sanding can smoothen out scratches and uneven spots. Then you must decide what kind of stain you want to use. There are two main kinds of stains available: non-penetrating stains and penetrating. Penetrating stains penetrate deeper into the wood than non-penetrating ones, making them ideal for dark colors such as mahogany. Penetrating stains are best paired with lighter colors, such as maple.

You will need to decide on the type of stain you want to use, and then prepare your tools. A paintbrush works well for applying stains because it allows you to spread the liquid evenly across the surface. After you're done painting, make sure to have some rags handy to remove any excess stain. If you intend to mix the stain yourself you will need enough containers to hold all the components.

After you have prepared your materials, clean the area you intend to stain. You can remove grime and dirt with warm water and soap. Wipe the entire piece of furniture with a rag dampened with clean water. If you intend to stain darker wood, make sure you get rid of any debris.

Apply the stain next. Start at one end of the piece of furniture and brush or spray the stain onto the wood. Work slowly and carefully, moving back and forth along the grain of the wood until you reach the opposite end. Be careful not to let the stain drip off the wood's edge. Before proceeding to the next step, let the stain dry thoroughly.

Protect the painted surface with a coat polyurethane paint sealant. Apply three coats of polyurethane sealer. Allow the third coat to dry overnight, before sanding.
