Chainsaw Wood Carving

what is wood planing

Many artists are exploring the art of chainsaw wood carving. The art is a natural extension their skill set. It often includes a combination traditional carving techniques and contemporary designs. Since the 1960s, Crager and Tracie Dugas have been carving beautiful wood pieces. They try to stay home as much as they can to do some staining or painting between shows. His daughters now help him with staining and painting, as well. White pine is preferred by them as it is lighter and less susceptible to cracking.

Rich Anderson

Rich Anderson is a chainsaw woodcarver from Reedsport, Oregon. Anderson, a Poughkeepsie-native, lives with his family. Anderson holds several degrees in the fine arts and teaches art to children in the Pre-K to fifth grades. Anderson has carved sculptures all over Long Island. He also has sculptures from Colorado. His pieces include standing trees as well as smaller pieces such corn ear sculptures. He is currently working to create a sign for Youngs Farm, Riverhead.

He can create stunning sculptures with a $400 chainsaw that is much faster than it would take to cut a tree. The chainsaw wood carving process is more sustainable than hammers or chisels because it can be recycled. Anderson promotes his business by word of mouth. He has created a huge cobra and great blue heron to help a Wading River mechanic.

Tracie Dugas

The life-size wizard carved from wood by Tracie Dugas is an impressive example of her skill as a chainsaw wood carver. The 49 year old young woman lives in Clare Nova Scotia, near Digby and Yarmouth. The chainsaw wood carver was one of several artists who exhibited their work during the Canada Day weekend in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Although tourists flooded Sydney's waterfront, the dry spell allowed locals to take in the view of the chainsaw artist and enjoy the waterway.

Tim Crager

Tim Crager, while he didn't consider him an artist and wasn't very skilled with a saw chainsaw, turned his passion into a full time career in carving six years back. Crager has sold more than $1,000,000 worth of carvings across the Eastern U.S. since then. Crager was brought up in Garrett, Eastern Kentucky. As a child, he watched a chainsaw carver at work. Crager was attracted to the art's unique style and he gave his boss his two-week notice.

Crager prefers white Pine because it's easy to find from tree trimming firms. However, many people prefer other kinds of wood. Crager follows the grain in the wood and lets it guide his creations. While Crager usually knows exactly what he's going to make before he begins a project, he will often change his mind mid-project. The creation of small projects takes only an hour. However, larger carvings can take from 33 to 36 hours.

Don Scoggins

Don Scoggins is an expert chainsaw and wooden carver. His wood carvings are detailed and often contain many animals. His creations attract attention from both neighbors and tourists. Blue Arrow Farm's coffee shop and entrance are graced with the chainsaw sculptures. Don Oriolo owns Blue Arrow Farm and is an artist and manager of Felix the Cat. Don Oriolo and his wife, Kacie, met while competing in a chainsaw competition at the New Jersey State Fair.

The 15-year-old wood carver and winner of the award was inspired to start carving at a Reedsport competition. He had already carved by hand, but he had never used a chainsaw before. His carvings now include an animal, a mother bear, and a squirrel looking out from a tree. He is now ready to compete in National Chainsaw Carving Competition.

How To

Tips for driving a nail in wood

To drive a nail into wood, the first step is to select the right size and type hammer. There are many types of hammers that you will find: claw hammers and sledgehammers; mallets; ball peen hammers; and hatchets. Each type of tool has its advantages and drawbacks. A clawhammer works best when hitting something hard like nails. However, it can sometimes be difficult to see exactly where the strike is going. The sledgehammer works well for large areas, but is too heavy for smaller tasks.

After choosing the right hammer, place your hand flat against the side of the head so that the handle rests comfortably in your palm. Hold the handle in your hand, but don’t force it too hard that you break. The hammer should be held straight up with your wrist relaxed. Next, swing the hammer toward the ground and aim for the nail's center. You should feel the impact of your hammer hitting the nail. You can practice swinging the hammer with a block or wood until you feel the rhythm.

You can now drive the nail by holding the hammer to your body. The nail should be perpendicular to wood's surface. Keep your attention on the tip. Swing the hammer forward, then follow through with the motion of the hammerhead. Repeat this action several times, gradually increasing the speed of the swing. Once you have mastered this technique, increase the power of your swings. Then, raise the hammer from your shoulder to bring it down. This will allow you to exert more energy.

Once you have successfully drilled the first hole in the nail, remove the hammer. To remove the remainder of the nails, you can use a screwdriver/pry bar. To avoid splitting the wood, make sure the nail heads are not touching the board's surface.
